SPNA Committees: Scholarship

SPNA Scholarship Deadline is April 15 SPNA is looking for applications for its 2007 scholarship program. Last year, SPNA awarded $2,500 scholarships to two local students. Applicants must demonstrate academic eligibility and financial need. Though first consideration will be given to students residing in the area represented by the Stanton Park Neighborhood Association (stretching from 2nd to 10th Street, NE and East Capitol to H Street, NE), students from the greater Capitol Hill area, and any qualifying high school senior residing in DC, are eligible. Applications are due April 15. For details, students should contact their high school’s guidance counselor or scholarship coordinator. For the past 14 years, the SPNA scholarship committee has gathered in May to face the difficult job of deciding who among the District public high school applicants will receive one of our college scholarships. So far, 40 high school seniors have receive awards, averaging about $1500 a piece.

The scholarship funds come from our annual dinner, raffle and auction, as well as donations by many, many neighbors. Our winners are mostly from Stanton Park and the Capitol Hill area, and have been accepted and graduate from a variety of colleges—University of Virginia, Carnegie Mellon, the New England Conservatory, Howard, and UDC. All applicants must be DC residents and June graduates with a college acceptance letter in hand and a high probability of success. The number of applicants has ranged from 30 to 60, making the selection process hard—we wish we had more to give.
